Below are a few notes based on Webber/Webber-related people buried at the Rolla Cemetery in Phelps County, Missouri. Phelps County is the home of John Webber, son of John Monroe Webber. I took photos of those within the Webber wall, but also those in the surrounding area. All may not be Webber related. Photos taken June 3, 2010.

John and Eliza Jane (Powell) Webber.

John was the eldest son of John Monroe and Elizabeth (Sauerman) Webber.Currently I don't have parents for Eliza. John was born January 24, 1819 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died May 31, 1889 in Spring Creek, Phelps County, Missouri. Per Illinois Marriages to 1850 John married Eliza Jane Powell on January 17, 1840 in Gallatin County, Illinois. Eliza was born January 22, 1824 in Galatia, Saline County, Illinois and died September 9, 1859 in Phelps County, Missouri

Uncle John Webber, an old citizen of this county, died yesterday at his home in Spring Creek Township, of consumption. He had been ailing for a long time and steadily getting worse and worse. He was about 70 years of age, and leaves a large family of children, some of whom are well along in years. He was the first settler on the site of this town and one of the moving spirits in locating the county seat here.

John Osborn Webber was born September 19, 1841 in Galatia, Saline County, Illinois and died December 13, 1860, in Rolla, Phelps County, Missouri. He was the eldest child of John and Eliza Webber.

James Henry Webber was born November 13, 1846 in Crawford County, Missouri the fourth child of John and Eliza (Powell) Webber and died January 12, 1884 in Rolla, Phelps County, Missouri. On May 28, 1868 James married Anna C. Stiff. Anna was born February 2, 1851, the daughter of Abram Lewis Stiff and Martha Elizabeth (Williams) Stiff. Anna re-married (Dr. E. B. Arthur) after James' death and Anna died December 21, 1888. More on this family below.

Note: There is a discrepancy with the death year from the tombstone and the date on this newspaper.

Mrs. Dr. E. B. Arthur died at Arlington this morning. Funeral services at M. E. Church Sunday, Dec. 23 upon arrival of train No. 2 from the West.

Margaret Ellen Webber was born January 7, 1854 in Phelps County, Missouri and died December 21, 1887 in Spring Creek, Phelps County, Missouri. She was the eighth child of John and Eliza (Powell) Webber. On November 24, 1885 in Phelps County, Missouri, she married James Ray.

According to the Phelps County Burial Records, Americus Columbus "A C" Webber is buried in the Rolla Cemetery. At this time no photo.

The last child of John and Eliza (Powell) Webber was Joseph Marian Webber. The tombstone appears to set his birthdate at 1850, while Herschel Dunham's research places it at 1858. The 1850 census includes Mary Emily born in 1850 and does not includes Joseph. Hence I believe his birthdate is 1858. Joseph died in 1860.

James Henry Webber was born December 23, 1876 in Rolla, Phelps County, Missouri the son of William Elijah and Maria Susan (Williams) Webber. James died July 31, 1948 in Phelps County, Missouri, On March 17, 1901 in Phelps County, Missouri, James married Ida M. Widener, the daughter of Samuel E and Sarah Elizabeth (Kester) Widener. Ida was boarn February 26, 1878 in Missouri and died September 22, 1971.

John Edward Webber was born March 17, 1915 at Edgar Springs, Phelps County, Missouri the fourth child of James Henry and Ida (Widener) Webber. John died February 2, 1940 in Rolla. John was still living with his parents as of April 1930 (census) in Phelps County, Missouri. According to his death certificate, John was married to Charlotte ______. No marriage liscense found.

Andrew Jackson "Jack" and Alma Lenore (Jones) Webber

Andrew Jackson "Jack" Webber was born May 5, 1874 in Phelps County, Missouri the son of John and Lucinda Frances (Sally) Webber and died October 19, 1952 in Rolla, Phelps County, Missouri. Jack married three times. First to Cynthia B. Askins on February 8, 1894. They were divorced. Next, on May 8, 1907, he married Alma Lenore Jones who was born March 12, 1888 in Missouri the daugher of John C. and Lydia (Gibler) Jones and died August 23, 1950 in Rolla, Phelps County, Missouri. After Alma's death, Jack married Cora May McAlister, the daughter of Alonzo and Ellen (Wilson) McCallister, on October 4, 1952. Note: Jack died 15 days after this wedding. Cora is buried with her first husband, Issac D. Broyles.

James Allen Vance was born December 26, 1892 (per tombstone - WWI record says 1891) in Flat, Phelps County, Missouri, the son of James A and Fannie E ( ) Vance. (Note: a Charles Weber born May 1877 is living with this family in 1900). James is the brother of Cora Adeline Vance who married Albert Franklin Webber. James died July 6, 1956.
