Dorothy L. (Cummins) Davidson, 85, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at Alton Memorial Hospital.
1 CONT The daughter of Marjorie Limerick and Wallace Cummins, she was born May 10, 1920, in Brownfield, Ill. Due to the death of her mother and illness of her father, she was raised by her paternal grandparents, the Rev. Dr. JohnWesley "J.W." Cummins, a Methodist minister, and his wife.
1 CONT In her early years, she lived in the Illinois cities of Metropolis, Marion and Edwardsville. She graduated from Edwardsville High School and attended Illinois Wesleyan University. She also attended the University of Kentucky, where she obtained a bachelor of science degree in medical technology. She moved to Alton in 1942 and became supervisor of the laboratory at Alton Memorial Hospital. A co-worker at the lab set up a blind date for her with Harold W. Davidson. They were united in marriage on Aug. 27, 1943, at St. John’s Methodist Church in Edwardsville and were married for 51 years. He died Jan. 18, 1995.
1 CONT In addition to being an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and University of Kentucky basketball fan, all of her adult life she was a volunteer and officer of many community organizations. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Alton, where she sang in the choir for 43 years. Some of her activities and community service through the years were: Hayner Public Library Board, League of Women Voters, Alton Youth Symphony, Alton Civic Orchestra Guild, Church Women United, church administrative board, Sunday school teacher, chairman of the March of Dimes Fund Drive, chairman of the American Heart Association Fund Drive, PTA, Mother’s Club, Cub Scout den mother, Well Baby Clinic, Meals on Wheels delivery, Alton School District After School Tutoring program, Pride Inc. board, Alton Women’s Home Foundation, Alton Memorial Board, Alton Memorial Health Services Foundation Board, PEO Sisterhood, Upper Alton Women’s Club and Rosewood Nursing Home activities volunteer.
1 CONT She was fortunate to receive the Pride Outstanding Citizen Award in 1998. She was also honored in 2003 for her 60 years of affiliation with Alton Memorial Hospital by the Alton Memorial Health Services Foundation. She tried to live to her grandfather’s belief, "One of the reasons we’re put on this earth is to be of service to other people".
1 CONT She and her husband had three sons, Stephen, Scott and Craig.
1 CONT Surviving are two sons, Scott and his family, son, Bradley, (Christy) and daughter, Stephanie, live in Phoenix, Ariz. and Craig and his family, wife, JoEllen; daughters, Christa and Jenna, live in Godfrey; Stephen’s daughter, Kimberly (Joel); and two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Tiffany.
1 CONT Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her eldest son, Stephen, in 1979; her parents; and a brother, George Wesley Cummins.
1 CONT A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Godfrey First United Methodist Church, 519 Grace St., Godfrey, with the Rev. Don Long Jr. officiating.
1 CONT Memorials in her honor may be given to Alton Memorial Hospital Health Services Foundation or to Pride.
1 CONT Elias-Smith Funeral Homes and Crematory of Alton is in charge of arrangements.
