The Continental Drifters will play Saturday at 2:15 a.m. at La Zona Rosa for the After-Hours Party.

SXSW After Hours Party

Saturday night (Sunday morning) 2:15 a.m.
La Zona Rosa

Last year's conference saw popular Mexican restaurant and nightclub La Zona Rosa establish itself as the hottest after-hours hangout in town. La Zona booked first-rate musical acts to play well into the wee hours of the morning and lured conference night-owls with the prospect of a wide variety of Mexican breakfast selections.

The tradition continues this year as La Zona presents post - 2 a.m. shows Thursaay through Saturday, with the final nignt's show serving as the official SXSW After-hours Party. The event features one of the conference's premier musical attractions, the Continental Drifters.

This supergroup of sorts has dual residency between New Orleans, home of drummer Carlo Nuccio and guitarist Ray Ganucheau. and Los Angeles, wnicn lays claim to ex-dB and satellite R.E.M.-er Peter Holsapple, ex-Bangie Vickie Peterson. ex-Cowsill Susan Cowsill, and ex-Dream Synaicate memcer Mark Walton. The band released a single on Austinite Bob Mould's Singles Only label in 1992 and has a CD due out on Monkey Hill (distributed through Ichibani) this year.

LIBERTY LUNCH

The Continental Drifters (1) are one of America's most intriguing and musically rewarding supergroups, performing straightforward American rock 'n' roll in the vein of The Band. With dual residency in Los Angeles and New Orleans, this sexlet features former members of the dBs. Dream Syndicate, the Bangles and the Cowsills plus a couple of Crescent City scene stalwarts.

SANTA FE

An ironic twist of this year's SXSW is •the appearance of two former members of the Cowsills, the 1960s band of siblings upon which The Partridge Family was based. Youngest sister Susan is back for the second straight year with the Continental Drifters, while oldest brother Billy makes his first visit to town in many years with his new bana, the Blue Shadows (11). Once a running buddy of Joe Ely, Cowsill now resides in Vancouver. B.C.. where he nas teamen up with Jeffrey Hatcher to create some of the best country-poo vocal harmonies since the Everly Brothers. The band's Sony/Canada oisc On the Floor of Heaven is a first-rate release crying out for American distribution. while the band's live shows aeiiver a kick that the CD only hints at.
