In addition to the new permanent singers, occasionally guest appearances by such singers as Sonny & Cher in 1967 and The Cowsills in 1968 helped to give the show the modern sound ABC executives craved. These guests, plus Dick Noel's "Boris Beatnik" characters, would help bring echoes of the turmoil of the 1960's to the show with a tinge of humor. Despite the social unrest which was occurring during the late 1960's, McNeill avoided controversy, confessing to a reporter he "never found that Viet Name, LSD or marijuana were good subjects for jokes" on the Breakfast Club
