His remains were recovered from the Chartres Street wharf in New Orleans December 28, 2005, nearly four months after his sister last heard from him September 1 in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Identified January 3. During a memorial service February 18, 2006, at King’s Park, Newport, his ashes were spread into the ocean’s edge by his sister Susan. Their mother Barbara Cowsill (July 12, 1928 – Jan. 30, 1985) had also been scattered at sea from Newport.

Cowsill, Billy (William Joseph Cowsill, Jr., Jan. 9, 1948 – Feb. 17, 2006) Lead singer of the musical group bearing his family name vocalized “The Rain, the Park and Other Things,” “Indian Lake,” “Hair.” He had a history of problems with drugs and alcohol. Ill with a variety of ailments including emphysema and osteoporosis, he died at 58 in Calgary, Alberta, the news of his death reaching his family just after the memorial service in Newport, Rhode Island, for his brother Barry. A service was held in Calgary, a mass in Newport and his urn taken to the Clarke Cooke House on Bannister’s Wharf there. The ashes were to be scattered – near their former home – from Alligator Rock near Indian Avenue in Middleton, RI.
