. . .

Arriving at the sound check he (Ed. Note: This is the "new drummer" which he doesn't name in the book) walks straight up to Jan and tells him that he was lead to believe that we were sending someone back to the condominium to get him. Jan says, more or less, oh don't worry about it because you are the best drummer in the world. Now I understood. He was Jan's boy and he could do whatever he pleased. It was our first day and things were already going sideways. That night, I got together with the four other band members. We already realized that the new drummer needed to go. We had almost three weeks off when we got home, so we would have plenty of time to rehearse a new drummer, but we really had to start the search now. One of the guys said that John Cowsill of The Cowsills group was a drummer and a singer and that he was looking for work. I said call him tomorrow.

. . .

Back in LA, John had started rehearsals with the band. He knew our songs pretty well, and he also know The Beach Boys songs that we did. The big plus was that he was also a great vocalist. None of our other drummers sang. Having one more voice was very exciting. Our plan was to tell Jan that our last drummer quit. Jan didn’t even know the guy's last name, and the guy had no way of reaching Jan.
