Cowsills

The Cowsills are, left to right, brothers Barry, Bob, Bill and John in back and sister Susan and mamma Barbara, front. Brother Paul has joined the grup since this photograph was taken. The Cowsills have a new album out.

Captain Sad and His Ship Of Fools - If the Cowsills didn't have talent, they wouldn't have lasted this long. After all, what group in its collective right mind would have included mama and kid sister in the act? Maybe not all members have powerhouse voices, but they complement each other suitably in harmony. (Though the family hails from Rhode Island, the sound is West Coast.) In this MGM album, the group's best so far, even Susan, 9, gets to solo and her young, sturdy voice ought to shame more mature songbirds. The group becomes seven with this LP as brother Paul joins the rest of the family. Dick, remains road manager. "Indian Lake" leads the hit list, but "Make the Music Flow" and "Ask the Children" have singles potential. "The Fantasy World of Harry Faversham," a clever comic tune about a Walter Mitty character, has long-shot chances. This is an exhuberant album, obviously done with joy and enthusiasm. Many who initially looked at the Cowsills disdainfully will be surprised.
